Maybe you've heard a story like this before...
On a colorful fall afternoon in New England – 18 years ago – two business college friends reunited at a wedding. They have not seen each other in years, both living on opposite sides of the country. Over a couple of drinks at the bar they quickly caught up on their latest ventures and decided to meet for lunch the next day.
The following day at lunch, one friend discussed the increasing demand for senior living and senior care services, and with baby boomers retiring soon, the trend will continue for years. The other friend was very intrigued – and after hearing a convincing argument – they decided to discuss forming a partnership in a senior living community.
After much dispute they couldn't see eye to eye on a partnership agreement. So they decided it was best to part ways, raise funding themselves, and move forward in different markets.
The first friend started a senior living community out west. The other started his senior living community in his New England hometown.
They kept in contact throughout the planning and building phases of the projects, both launching the communities as successes.
Business was time consuming and being on opposite sides of the country they gradually lost touch with each other.
This past year the two friends reunited at a conference in Denver. They were enthusiastic to catch up and decided to grab dinner.
At dinner, it was obvious one friend was significantly more successful than the other friend.
The East Coast friend has developed his business to 25 highly regarded assisted living communities around the country and enjoys the reassurance of 98% occupancy. His cash flow is incredible; the life he lives, even better. His net worth is 9 figures. He and his family live in their New England dream home, along with a winter home and yacht in southern Florida.
The friend on the West Coast has only one community and struggles to keep 78% occupancy. He now has a large amount of debt and can’t attract the right people to help run his community and get new residents.
How could this happen? They both went to the same prestigious college and received the same business degree. They both had successful careers before.
It is the knowledge the first friend gained and what he did with it. During the 15 years they lost touch, he acquired superior knowledge compared to the other friend.
Just as significant, he took action on all the knowledge he acquired over the years.
